Soil Shift
The movement of the soil beneath the home was enough to separate the concrete footing at bottom from the wooden post at top. This separation caused the floor above to sink.
Shims Are Not The Answer
The wooden shim that you see getting crushed by the wooden post was put there long before we were called for our inspection. The reason it was put there was to address the issue of the concrete footing at bottom sinking away from the wooden posts. The wooden shim was intended to fill the gap, which I'm sure worked for a bit, but as you can see, the weight was too much for the shim and the problems that were temporarily solved are here again.
You Will Not Win With Shims
Shims are only a temporary fix. They will not address the problem long-term.
The Solution For Sinking Floors
For Jonathan and Stacy, we installed 18 of these Smartjack Adjustable Steel Posts near existing wooden support posts to lift and stabilize their floor.
